Chapter 03

Casino Hotels

Four Canadian hotels that run a gaming floor as one department among many. Each is described here as a hotel first — rooms, dining, setting — with the floor noted where it matters.

Montreal Casino & Hotel

Montreal, Canada

The casino occupies the former French pavilion from Expo 67, on Ile Notre-Dame in the middle of the Saint Lawrence. Few gaming buildings anywhere have a stranger or better origin.

Guests stay in partner hotel accommodation and cross to the island for dining, shows and the gaming floor. Restaurants range from a buffet to a fine-dining room; the concert hall books through the year.

The park around it — Parc Jean-Drapeau — carries cycling paths, the Biosphere and summer festivals. Downtown Montreal is a short drive or metro ride across the water.

Fallsview Casino Resort

Niagara Falls, Canada

Built into the escarpment above the Horseshoe Falls, the resort earns its name: the falls are visible from the public levels and from a large share of the guest rooms.

It functions first as a full-service hotel — several hundred rooms, spa, a spread of restaurants, a theatre that draws touring acts. The gaming floor is one department among those, sizeable but not the whole building.

Fallsview's position puts the tourist district, the gorge walk and the boat landings within walking distance, which is not true of every hotel in the town.

  • Falls-facing rooms
  • Theatre programming
  • Spa and dining

River Rock Casino Resort

Richmond, Canada

Richmond sits between Vancouver and the airport, and River Rock uses that geography well. The Canada Line stops outside; the terminal is minutes away.

The property combines a hotel, a show theatre, a marina on the Fraser River and a gaming floor. Its restaurants lean on Richmond's Asian dining culture, which is among the strongest in North America.

Guests using it as an airport hotel get more than that label usually promises: river frontage, a spa, and a rail link straight into downtown Vancouver in roughly twenty minutes.

  • Canada Line access
  • Fraser River marina
  • Show theatre
  • Near Vancouver airport

Casino Rama Resort

Rama, Canada

Rama stands on the land of the Chippewas of Rama First Nation, near Orillia in Ontario cottage country. The First Nation's ownership shapes how the resort presents itself.

The hotel side runs to several hundred rooms with a spa and a spread of restaurants. An entertainment centre seating several thousand has hosted touring musicians and comedians for decades; the gaming floor operates alongside it.

Lake Couchiching is minutes away, and the surrounding region fills with cottagers in summer and snowmobilers in winter. Toronto is about a ninety-minute drive south.

  • First Nation owned
  • Ontario cottage country
  • Large entertainment centre
  • Spa and restaurants
