Arctic SnowHotel
Rovaniemi, Finland
Rebuilt every winter from snow and ice at Lehtojarvi, outside Rovaniemi. By spring it has melted back into the ground, and the following December it goes up again in a slightly different form.
Snow rooms hold near minus five degrees whatever the weather outside. Guests sleep in rated bags on ice beds layered with reindeer hides, and heated sanitary facilities sit in a separate warm building a short walk away. Glass igloos offer the alternative: a warm bed under a transparent roof, aimed at anyone hoping to watch the aurora without dressing for it.
A snow restaurant, an ice bar and smoke saunas complete the site. Rovaniemi's airport is a short transfer, which makes a one-night stay practical.
